Road and rail jobs often ask for more than "hi vis". A rail network or a road contract can name a particular colour, a tape layout and a standard, and a shirt that's fine on a building site may not be accepted in the rail corridor. So before you order for a crew, get written answers from your site manager on six things. Here they are, with what our own listings say for each.

1. Which network, authority or contract is it?

Start here, because the rest follows from it. On rail work, ask which network the crew will be on. Our own listings hint at why: some Syzmik shirts are described with an X back tape layout for NSW rail, such as the ZW692, and others with a "VIC Rail" tape configuration and orange shade, such as the ZW682. Both are listed as 150 GSM cotton twill with underarm and upper back mesh vents, which helps in the heat, and each comes in one orange only. In the product photos, the NSW shirt has a large X of tape across the back, while the VIC shirt has hoops and no X. That's how the supplier describes them, not a network rule, so if your crew works on more than one network, ask each one what it accepts.

On road work, ask who sets the clothing requirement: your employer, the principal contractor or the road authority named in the contract. Some of our listings use a general phrase rather than a document. The Syzmik ZP920 taped pant, for example, refers to "Australian night time road work requirements" without saying which. It's listed in navy or white, so its visibility comes from the tape rather than a fluoro colour; ask whether the site wants fluoro pants as well. Treat wording like that as a prompt to ask, not as an answer.

2. Is a particular colour or shade required?

Orange isn't always just orange. The Bisley BS6166XT comes in two colours on our site, "Rail Orange" and "Orange", and its rail line applies to the first one only. Several Syzmik styles are offered only in a colour named "Vic Rail Orange". If your site names a shade, write the exact name down and check it against the colour option before you add to cart.

3. Which standard does the site name, and which edition?

The Australian rail standard for personal protective equipment is AS 7471:2019, published by the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB). It sets minimum requirements for PPE in the rail corridor, and hi vis outer clothing is one of the items it covers. RISSB began a review of it in 2025, so ask which edition your site names. One rail shirt on our site quotes AS 7471:2019, word for word from the listing:

  • Bisley BS6166XT: "AUS RAIL AS 7471:2019 APPLIES TO RAIL ORANGE COLOURWAY ONLY".

Most of the other rail-named styles in our rail range don't quote AS 7471 on our listings. That doesn't mean they fall short; it means our listing doesn't say, so check the garment label against what your site asks for. The site may also name the hi vis garment standard and a day, night or day/night class, which our day and night hi vis guide explains.

4. Which garments does the rule cover?

Ask whether the requirement is for the shirt only, or for every outer layer. On a cold morning, a jumper or jacket can cover the taped shirt underneath. Our rail range includes outer layers named for the same networks or tape layouts:

  • a Syzmik VIC Rail zip vest ZV687 and the NSW Rail vest ZV697;
  • the VIC Rail 1/4 zip pullover ZT640 and the X Back Rail Jumper ZT660;
  • jackets such as the VIC Rail 4 in 1 waterproof jacket ZJ580, and the DNC 3990, an X back 4 in 1 with a waterproof shell and a fleece inner whose sleeves zip off to make a reversible vest.

Ask about pants too. If road work runs into the night, check whether taped pants are needed as well. Our taped pants have their own collection.

5. What does each role need?

One crew can need different kit. Two practical examples from our listings:

  • Traffic controllers. The Syzmik ZP980 and women's ZP720 taped pants list a "Side loop holder for traffic control wand".
  • Women on the crew. Rail-specific women's styles exist: the Hard Yakka Y08420 women's shirt lists 50mm tape "in Vic Rail and Biomotion configuration", and the Syzmik ZJ770 is a women's NSW Rail X back soft shell jacket. Our women's fit guide covers sizing.

Also ask about polos. If your crew prefers a knit top, the DNC 3714 is a long sleeve 175 gsm polyester micromesh polo with cross back tape, in orange/navy only. Micromesh is light and open, which suits hot days, but the listing doesn't mention chest pockets, so a shirt may suit crew who carry pens and notebooks. The Syzmik ZH690 is a long sleeve polo with X back rail tape.

6. Where can logos go?

Ask before you brand anything. Keep logos and names clear of the reflective tape, and run the placement past your safety officer or principal contractor, because a network or contractor may have its own rules on decoration. On an X back shirt the tape covers much of the back, so a large back print may not fit at all. A small logo on the chest, clear of the tape, is the usual starting point. Our embroidery or printing guide covers the choice of method.

What our listings can and can't tell you

Every product quote above is copied from our listings, which are based on the supplier's product information. We haven't tested these garments, and a listing can't tell you whether a particular network or contract will accept them. Only the garment's label and your site's written requirement can settle that. If your crew's work is mostly on general sites, our Bisley taped and untaped shirt comparison and pink hi vis guide cover other options.
