Hard hats differ in four things you can actually choose: the peak, the vents, the harness inside and the colour. Pick those to suit the job and the people wearing them, then add the accessories they need and your logo. Before you buy, check what your site or principal contractor requires, because their rules decide what's acceptable, not a catalogue.
The hard hats we list
- PRO Choice HHV6: an ABS shell with 6 air vents, a 6 point pushlock harness, an "Edge gutter to deflect rain" and an "Extended peak". It comes in eight colours.
- PRO Choice HHV9: 9 air vents and a 6 point pushlock harness, in eleven colours, including Fluoro Pink, Fluoro Orange and Grey.
- PRO Choice HHV9R: the 9 vent hat with a 6 point ratchet harness instead, in eight colours.
- PRO Choice HHV6FB: a full brim hat with 6 vents and a ratchet harness. The listing says the brim "extends coverage to over the neck & ears", with a "Slightly shorter front peak allowing for good upward vision".
- PRICE BUSTER Push-Lock Safety Helmet: an ABS shell, 6 air vents, a 6 point push-lock harness and a removable sweatband, in white. Its listing reads "TYPE 1 Safety Helmet meets AS/NZS 1801:1997; Certified by BSI BMP 820110".
The PRO Choice listings on our site don't quote a helmet standard. If your site names a standard or edition, check the model and colour with us before you order.
Choosing a type
| Choice | What we list | Worth weighing |
|---|---|---|
| Peak | Front peak (HHV6, HHV9, HHV9R) or full brim (HHV6FB) | Brim covers neck and ears |
| Harness | Pushlock (HHV6, HHV9) or ratchet (HHV9R, HHV6FB) | Ratchet is quicker to re-adjust |
| Vents | 6 or 9 air vents | Vents listed for airflow |
| Colour | Up to eleven, by model | Some sites colour code by role |
A pushlock harness is set by pressing pegs into holes, so it suits a hat that stays with one person. A ratchet harness adjusts with a dial at the back, which is quicker to change if more than one person wears the hat. If your site uses colours to show roles, such as supervisors or visitors, find out the scheme before you choose. And if you're after pink, the HHV9 is the one we list in Fluoro Pink. Our pink hi vis guide covers matching shirts, polos and vests.
Hard hat or bump cap?
We also list PRO Choice bump caps, which look like a baseball cap with a protective liner. Most of their listings say they comply with EN812, the European industrial bump cap standard, and the AirBump listings call them "ideal for worksites that are not hard hat compulsory". That's the key point: a bump cap is for bumping your head on fixed objects, such as racking, beams or pipes. It isn't designed for falling objects, so it's no stand-in where a hard hat is required. The AirBump Bump Cap adjusts from 53 to 64cm and has a "Washable and embroidery friendly outer cap", so ask us about adding your logo to that one. There's also a wide brim version with a toggle chin strap.
Accessories that fit
- Chin strap HHCS: adjustable elastic, sold in a pack of 5. The listing says it "Keeps hard hat in place in active situations".
- Cotton sweatband HHSB: a pack of 5, listed "to suit all Pro Choice Safety Gear Hard Hats" and "Replaceable for hygiene and comfort". Handy when hats are handed on.
- Browguard attachment HHBGE: clips into the 25mm slots on PRO Choice hard hats. Its eye and face protection standard, AS/NZ 1337.1:2010 as the listing writes it, applies "when used in conjunction with" a PRO Choice hard hat and visor, so ask us which visor goes with it.
- THORZT cooling pads: a crown pad that attaches to the hard hat liner with hook and loop, and a brow pad with an elastic back. Both listings say the pad "When wet, stays cool while you are active".
Adding your logo
Our hard hats are sold plain. The PRO Choice listings say "Purchase is for plain, undecorated hard hat". For branded hats, use our separate printed hard hats site, printedhardhats.diworkwear.com.au. There you pick the hard hat, say how many colours your logo has, and upload your logo to an online designer with hard hat templates. That site notes the number of colours in your logo affects the cost, so a one or two colour version of your logo is worth having ready.
Don't put stickers, paint or markers on a shell until you've checked the maker's instructions or asked your safety officer. For caps, polos and vests that go with the hats, our embroidery or printing guide explains which method suits which garment.
