Farm workwear comes down to three things: a cotton work shirt you can wear from first light to dusk, a hat with a brim all the way round, and a warm layer and a rain jacket for when the weather turns. Below are the styles we list for each job, and what their listings do and don't tell you.
One work shirt, two weights
The Pilbara closed front shirt comes in a light and a heavy weight that are otherwise built the same way. Both are listed as mercerised, double pre-shrunk 100% cotton twill, with twin needle stitching and bar tacks, two button-down chest pockets with a pen division in the left pocket, and two-button adjustable cuffs.
- The Pilbara RM200CF is the light weight, at 150gsm, in sizes XS to 6XL and more than 20 colours.
- The Pilbara RM800CF is the heavy weight, at 190gsm, in sizes XS to 6XL and seven colours: Cobalt Blue, Diesel, Emerald, French Navy, Light Blue, Red and Stone.
All seven RM800CF colours are also in the RM200CF list, so you can wear the lighter shirt through summer and the heavier one in the cooler months without changing colour. Both listings give a UPF 50+ rating to AS 4399:2020, except in Stone.
For women, the Pilbara RM300CF is the same 150gsm closed front shirt in sizes 6 to 24, with the same UPF 50+ rating except in Blush, Mint and Stone. The open front Pilbara RM600BT is the same 150gsm twill in sizes 6 to 24 and quotes UPF 50+ to AS 4399:2020 with some colours excluded; if you need Blush or Mint with a confirmed rating, ask us to check before you order. We don't list a women's version of the heavy weight. For kids, our Pilbara kids work shirts guide lines up the kids' closed front shirt with the adult colours, and our summer work shirts guide covers sleeves and staying cool.
Check shirts for town and field days
For a trip into town, a field day or the saleyards, a check shirt looks a little smarter than twill. The Pilbara Mens Check RMPC004 and Womens Check RMPC003 are 130gsm "Easy Care, Fine Cotton" in a yarn dyed check, with two button-down chest pockets. Both come in Blue/White, Emerald/White and Navy/White Check, and the women's also in Pink/White Check. Men's sizes run XS to 6XL (Emerald stops at 5XL) and women's 6 to 20.
Two things to check. Neither listing gives a UPF rating, so for a full day in the sun the twill shirts above are the ones with a stated rating. And both list "Windmill Embroidery On Left Pocket", so if you want your farm name on the chest, ask us where it should go.
Cold mornings
For a frosty start, the Ritemate Flannelette Quilted Shirt RM123SQS is a 160gsm, preshrunk 100% cotton flannelette open front shirt with a "Quilted lining for extra warmth". It's listed with a UPF 50+ rating to AS 4399:2020, in five colourways: Green-Black, Grey-Black, Navy-White, Red-Black and Royal-Navy. Every colourway comes in XS to 7XL, and Royal-Navy also in 8XL and 10XL. It's titled as a men's shirt, so check the fit for women on the team. Worn over a twill shirt, it can come off as the day warms up. For jackets and vests, see our winter work jackets guide.
A hat with a brim all the way round
You turn in every direction while you work a paddock, so a brim that circles the whole head shades more than a cap's peak does. Two styles we list:
- The Legend Life Surf Hat 4287 comes in four head sizes (55 to 61cm) and four colours, including Natural and Bottle. It's made from heavy brushed cotton, has a cord with a slide toggle, and is listed as UPF 50+, meeting AS/NZS 4399.
- The FXD Tech Boonie Hat is lightweight polyester with mesh vents at the sides, a removable chin strap and a "Longer length brim at back", one size with an adjustable cord, in Black or Khaki. Its listing doesn't name a sun protection standard.
A chin cord or strap keeps the hat on in a gusty paddock. If you'd rather a genuine straw hat with your farm's badge on it, our custom straw hats guide explains how the logo badge works, and there are more styles in our broad brim and sun hats collection.
When the weather turns
A rain jacket kept behind the ute seat is the one you'll have when a storm rolls in. For adults, our winter work jackets guide compares rain jackets with a published waterproof rating. For the kids, the JB's Kids Rain Forest Jacket 3RFJK comes in navy, in sizes 6 to 14, with sealed seams, a concealed hood and a listed "Waterproof to 20,000mm rating".
Putting the farm name on it
A farm or station name embroidered on the shirt chest and the hat front makes a small team easy to recognise at a field day or when a contractor turns up. Our embroidery or printing guide explains why cotton twill takes embroidery well. Our FAQ sets out the approval step: a new logo comes to you as a texted or emailed sample, and production waits for your OK.
When you know who needs what, send us the styles, colours and sizes, plus your logo or farm name, through our custom workwear enquiry form, and we'll come back with a quote.
