A composite toe cap means the toe protection isn't steel. It doesn't automatically mean the whole boot is metal-free. Zips, eyelets, lace hooks, shanks and puncture-resistant midsoles can all be made of metal or non-metal materials, depending on the boot. If you need a boot with no metal at all, look for a maker that says so in plain words, such as "metal free", and check the details.
Why people ask for metal-free boots
Common reasons are FIFO work, where you're in and out of airport security every swing, and sites that use metal detectors or scanners. Others simply prefer a composite toe because it's lighter than steel. Whatever the reason, the question to ask is the same: which parts of this boot are metal?
The parts to check
| Part | What to look for on the label |
|---|---|
| Toe cap | Steel, alloy (aluminium, which is still metal), or a non-metal cap described as composite or fibreglass. |
| Midsole | Anti-perforation midsoles can be steel plate or a textile. "Flexible anti-perforation midsole" or "FAP" usually means a non-metal layer, but check. |
| Zip and zip latch | Side zips often have metal teeth or pullers. Look for the zip described in the specs. |
| Eyelets and lace hooks | Some makers call out "metal free" or "non-metallic" lacing hardware. |
| Shank | The stiffener under the arch can be steel or a non-metal material. |
How our boots are labelled
We've gone through what each maker states on our product pages, word for word, so you can compare like with like.
- Puma Dash, Pace 2.0, Relay and Tanami: Puma lists each of these as "Metal Free". The Dash has a composite toe cap; the Pace 2.0, Relay and Tanami use a fibreglass toe cap. Puma states all four are certified to AS 2210.3:2019.
- New Balance Industrial Calibre and Contour: New Balance describes these as "Airport Friendly", with a composite toe and an anti-perforation midsole. They also have a YKK side zip (see the note on zips below).
- Magnum Precision Max (MPN100): Magnum describes it as having "scanner safe, non-metallic composite hardware" and a composite toe cap.
- Blundstone 8553 and 8860/8863 Rotoflex: composite toe cap and "metal free" lace rings, plus a heavy-duty side zip. Blundstone doesn't call the whole boot metal-free.
- Steel Blue Southern Cross Zip Scuff (318591): composite toe cap and "non-metallic lacing", with a side zip.
A note on zips: the New Balance, Magnum, Blundstone and Steel Blue boots above all have side zips, and their listings don't say what the zip teeth and pullers are made of. If a completely metal-free boot matters for your work, the Puma styles are the ones whose makers state "Metal Free" outright.
"Airport friendly" and "scanner safe" are the makers' own descriptions. Airport and site screening equipment varies, and security staff can still ask you to take boots off. Treat these boots as less likely to set off a detector, not guaranteed to pass one.
Composite toe or steel toe?
Under the Australian safety footwear standard (AS 2210.3), a toe cap has to pass the same impact and compression tests whether it's steel or composite, so composite isn't "weaker" because it isn't steel. The Puma, Blundstone and Steel Blue listings in this guide state 200 joule toe protection. Composite caps are usually lighter, and they conduct less heat and cold than steel. Steel caps can be thinner, which can give a slightly slimmer toe. If your site or employer specifies a type of toe cap, follow that.
A few practical tips
- If you fly for work, read the spec for every part, not just the toe. Even a small metal part, like a zip pull or latch, can be picked up by a sensitive detector.
- Check your site's footwear rules before you buy. Some sites specify an electrical hazard rating or anti-static soles, which is a separate question from metal content. The Puma Tanami, for example, lists an electrical hazard rating to the US ASTM F2413 standard; several of the others list anti-static.
