Wide-fit work boots: Magnum Precision Max Wide and New Balance Industrial 4E X-Wide boots in Black and Wheat

If your safety boots feel fine for length but squeeze across the ball of your foot by smoko, you probably need a wider fit, not a bigger size. Going up a size to get width just gives you more room at the toe, more heel slip and a boot that creases in the wrong place. A boot made on a wide last fixes the actual problem.

What the width letters mean

Most boot brands only list a length size, like UK 9. A few also list a width. The letter system comes from US sizing and New Balance uses it on its work boots:

  • D is a standard men's width.
  • 2E (sometimes written EE) is wide.
  • 4E is extra wide. New Balance labels its 4E boots "X-Wide".

EE and 2E are two ways of writing the same width letter. When Syzmik says its boots are built on a "wide fit EE last", that's the same wide category New Balance calls 2E. Every maker's last is shaped a little differently, though, so two "2E" boots won't always fit the same foot the same way.

Wide toe cap or wide boot?

These aren't the same. Some boots have a broad or wide toe cap but are built on a standard last. Blundstone, for example, describes the toe caps on several Rotoflex boots as "broad fitting". That gives your toes more room, but it doesn't make the whole boot wider through the ball of the foot. If the squeeze is across the widest part of your foot, look for a boot sold as a wide or 2E/4E fit, not just a roomy toe cap.

Checking the fit

  • Try boots on later in the day, when your feet are at their largest after work.
  • Wear the socks you actually work in. A thick work sock can take up a surprising amount of width.
  • Stand up and walk. The ball of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot without the leather bulging over the sole.
  • Your toes shouldn't touch the toe cap when you walk. A safety toe cap won't stretch, so a boot that pinches there in the shop will pinch on site.
  • A little heel lift is normal in a new boot. A lot of heel lift usually means the boot is too long, often because someone has gone up a size to get width.

Leather uppers soften with wear, but the sole and toe cap don't change shape. Don't count on a tight safety boot "breaking in" across the toe.

Ordering for a crew

If you're buying boots for a team, ask each person whether they normally need a wide fit before you place the order. It's easier than swapping half a dozen pairs later. Our staff can help you work through sizes for a team order, and you can mix wide and standard fits in the same order.
